Walking into this class on Day 1, I knew very little about photography. I knew how to take a picture on a camera, and zoom in on subjects, but that was pretty much all I knew. Any basic photography vocabulary and rules went over my head. I knew that I had a lot to learn in order to be successful in this class. The first time we were told to take the cameras out and take pictures, I was very nervous. I had no idea what I was doing, so I went out and took some pretty poor quality pictures. Things started to go a lot better once we started learning about the composition elements in photography. My photos were still not great, but they were slowly starting to improve. As the class went on, I became a lot more knowledgable about photography, and that definitely was seen in my photos that I was taking in my photoshoots. I learned how to create the right exposure for my pictures and include only what was only necessary for my pictures, to avoid having any distractions in my photos. The two images below are some of my best and favorite photos that I took over the course of this trimester. Photoshop was definitely something that made me anxious thinking about it. I had never used Photoshop before this class, so I was unfamiliar with how it worked or how to do most things within the app. Luckily, we started out with easy assignments, and I was able to figure things out along the way. I think the most challenging Photoshop assignment I did was the Car Retouch assignment. This was the first assignment where I used a lot of new tools. It was a pretty difficult assignment for me and I think this was my worst Photoshop assignment that I did. I learned a lot on Photoshop, and the more we practiced, the better I became at using the tools. As the trimester went on, I was no longer nervous about the Photoshop assignments. I became a lot more familiar with the app, and I got better at using each tool. Below are some of my best Photoshop assignments. Overall, I enjoyed this class and feel like I learned a lot, making me a much better photographer than when I first started this class.

For this Photoshop assignment, our job was to pick a word, and give its definition in words, and also provide examples of the word through pictures. Here are my images: Like the Visual Puns, the most difficult part of this assignment was choosing a word to define and choose pictures of. Once I chose my words, the rest was not difficult at all. I had a lot of fun throughout this assignment, and I enjoyed seeing my final products.
For this Photoshop assignment, our job was to recreate a pun through the use of images. Here are my puns: I had a lot of fun during this assignment. For me, the most difficult part was trying to think of clever puns to recreate. The Photoshop part was very easy. I liked seeing what I could do to make these images and guessing what the rest of my class created.
This week, I chose to take photos of different landscapes for my shooting assignment. I enjoyed this shooting assignment, but it was a bit of a challenge. While I was taking pictures, it was raining outside, so I had to time my shoots so that I could get some pictures taken when it was not raining. Also, because it was raining, the lighting was not ideal, and it was difficult to capture the nice colors of the neighborhood I was taking pictures of. Despite these challenges, I did have fun and I enjoyed looking at my photos when I was done.
This week, our job was to create a photo from a location in the school with multiple images of ourself or a friend. We were supposed to take multiple pictures of someone with different expressions or poses and then put it all into one photo. This assignment was a lot easier that I expected. I thought it was going to be a lot more difficult to take different images of someone and put them all into one picture, but it actually did not require many steps to create these final products. The most tedious part of this assignment was cleaning up the blending around each image. Overall, I enjoyed this assignment.
I learned a lot this week. I learned that not all photos look good in black and white. In some photos, it was hard to tell that there was anything in the photo because it was so dark. I also learned that while some photos look good in black and white, some just look better in color. There might be an object in a photo that looks better in color because it might have a really nice color that makes the photo look nicer than if it was in black and white. Overall, I enjoyed seeing how my pictures turned out.
For this Photoshop assignment, our job was to take two different photos of someone else from the class. One photo was supposed to be in a studio with studio lighting, and the other photo was supposed to be a non-studio photo, with a bounce card to control the lighting in our photos. The photo on the left is my studio photo. I learned how to adjust the lights in the studio correctly to create the right lighting for my professional looking photo. The picture on the right is my non-studio shot. This one was a bit more difficult, as I had to adjust my subject to get rid of any shadows on her face. It took a little more work to get the correct lighting for this photo. Overall, this was a really fun assignment.
This week, I choose to take pictures of my dog, Violet, for my shooting assignment. This was a really easy assignment for me. Violet is a very lazy dog who likes to sleep and lay around the house, so making sure she stayed still for the camera was never an issue. The only slight difficulty I had was making sure the exposure was correct, as her fur is such a dark color.
For this assignment, we had the freedom to pick our own Photoshop assignments. Apart from one tutorial that we had to do, where we added a pop of color to a black and white photo, we could pick any tutorial we wanted. https://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/watercolor-painting/ I learned a lot during this assignment. There were some tutorials I tried that were very difficult others that were quick and easy. These tutorials posted above were not too challenging for me. There were a lot of layers involved in creating the watercolor, and painting effect, and I learned how to manage these layers and make sure they were in the right order. Overall, this was a really fun assignment.
This week, I decided to focus on architecture for my photo assignment. My friend and I found an old, abandoned house in the middle of a field by my house, so we decided to take photos of it for our assignment. I had a lot of fun during this assignment. A man who lived across the street from this house came out while we were shooting, and told us more about the house. It was really fun to learn about the history of the house, and about the people who first lived there. This was a pretty easy assignment for me. I did not have much difficulty capturing the structure and elements of the house. The one difficulty I had was trying to make sure my exposure was correct, as it was very sunny and sometimes hard to see my subject in the photos.
